BÂTIR LE COMMUN
International Artist Laboratory
Showing & Get Together
An International artist group seeks new narratives for a shared past, a common vision of the future and thus also a changed shared view of the present between Germany and Cameroon - and beyond.
In 1884, Germany declared Cameroon a protectorate. A long struggle for possession of the territory and the freedom of its inhabitants began. Numerous resistance movements against the European colonial power formed and worked against aggressive land grabbing, forced labour and tyranny. On the fringes of the scene, cultures intersect. In 1914, the area was occupied by France and Great Britain. International artists search for traces of German-Cameroonian history. An interdisciplinary stage performance tells a story of power, resistance and interconnections. New narratives and perspectives emerge on a shared past, a common vision of the future and, with it, a changed shared view of the present between Germany and Cameroon – and beyond.
