FAVORITEN is the festival of independently producing performing arts in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Every two years, the independent scene invites you to Dortmund to present and discuss aesthetically innovative works, questions and forms of expression.

FAVORITEN FESTIVAL 2022: 15.-25.9.2022

Under the motto (Un)Learning for possible futures, Anne Mahlow, Margo Zālīte and Sina-Marie Schneller will deal with the challenges of the present and future on an artistic and discursive level for the FAVORITEN Festival 2022. They place the common, continuous process of (over)learning and growing together between genders, generations, classes and borders at the center of the festival.

In the almost three decades of its existence, the context of the NRW theater festival, which was founded in 1985 under the name Theaterzwang, has changed continuously: in terms of cultural policy, aesthetics, urban planning, sociographic. The same applies to the concept and self-image of the independent scene itself. At the interface of art, cultural theory and social politics, the focus is always on artists who stand for independent aesthetic concepts with their thematic settings and who express current social processes with the development of innovative forms .

As a forum for outstanding productions from the independent scene in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany's oldest off-theatre festival looks back on a unique and long-standing history of continuous support for independent theater work in NRW. Responsibility for current and future developments in the independent scene in NRW lies in the visibility and history of the festival, which radiates beyond the state borders. With its open and contemporary programme, the festival is aimed equally at the local and regional population as well as at a national and international specialist audience.

Organizers of the festival are the NRW State Office for Independent Performing Arts e.V. and the Cultural Office of the City of Dortmund. FAVORITEN is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of Nordrhein-Westfalen, among others.
